WELCOME TO THE RIVER ELWY WILDLIFE BLOG.
About the River Elwy and this blog.
The River Elwy is a very scenic river full of wildlife throughout the year. Twisting and turning as it meanders from it's source at Llangernyw, through St Asaph City, to it's end where it enters the sea at Rhyl Harbor, having flowed through a number of villages and woods.
This blog is about the nature and wildlife to be found along the rivers lower reaches namely from Trefnant through St Asaph to Ruddlan, and the wider surrounding area. It is also a place for me to showcase my photographs from my walks along the riverbanks. From time to time there will be pictures taken from other places and the location will be stated in the description.

After winter which seemed to hang on for ever I was bursting to get out there with the camera, even though I had managed a few days here n there throughout the winter, the frenzy of wildlife as it emerges from those long cold days of Winter is something to behold. From the Bird calls and mating songs and dances right down to the emergence of the little insects such as the gnats, and of course the wild plants and flowers, it's all a sight you wouldn't want to miss. And I have loved watching it all spring into action so much I neglected the fact I was going to write a blog this year. Most if not all of the photo's you will see are ones taken this year.
So let me begin by introducing you to the humble Blackbird. This male Blackbird watching the Ladies go by.

Who would of thought you could of come out of a long awful winter outdoors and still look so pretty and in real good shape. These two Blackbirds and many more photographed at the end of the lane by foxons fishing tackle shop St Asaph.

The chaffinch where the next ones I spotted Behind the Docs Surgery near the bench where I was able to capture some closeups of a male in full song and a female with nesting material in her beak. The thing I have noticed that dure in the spring when the birds are in full calling and beginning to find a mate and pair up they are so busy and focused they are not fazed so much by your presents so long as your not flailing about, as I do from time to time fiddling around with camera settings at the same time thinking to myself just take the shot.
Male Chaffinch in full song.
Female at rest from building a nest.

Everyone's favorite the Robin,. Now there is no humming or haring whether these next pictures are male or female Robins I can honestly state here I do not know, apparently its really difficult to tell. So if anyone does know, be sure to let me know.

These next Birds I spotted I have never seen before. The Siskin. It took near on a week to get these on camera clear enough to see, as they continued to stay in the the upper branches of a some very tall Alder trees. I spotted some further up the river on some Catkin trees so slightly lower down. Up towards the ARGY (a nic name given to a spot on the river) Usually a particular deep pool used for diving in the summer.
Siskin Female.
Siskin Male

Moving away from the riverbank, I wandered up to the Cefn Road and to my delight spotted this Squirrel in a far off tree across the field at the bottom of the hill. He was very busy pruning and taking from his stores.
I was able to get a nice video clip too as he hung around for some time.
And this one behind foxons.
